Governor’s Island Art Fair – 2016 September
10 SepVisited the first weekend of the Governor’s Island Art Fair. Saw many excellent pieces on display. Standouts included portraits by Quigley, zoetrope with synchronized swimmers by Wang and banana by Cunningham. Highly recommended way to enjoy this warm weather and soak in new ideas.
“The Zoedream” by Jia Wang – zoetrope of synchronized swimmers 3D printed presented with strobe light. There is so much to take in. Be sure to see the object both spinning alive and static. Dazzling.
“Nude Descending a Staircase” by Charlie Cunningham – The scale and the emotion stop many visitors. The title of the piece add to the tragedy and comedy.
Salesman Series Project by Lawrence Quigley – Portraits of regional sales managers painted onto nickels. Brilliant idea, well executed.
“Fruit Fight” by Luiza Kurzyna – Ms. Kurzyna was friendly and engaging. I look forward to seeing one of her performances.
“Vena Cava” by Cynthia Ruse – Ms. Ruse freely explained her intent. I encourage all to peek into the closet to explore the surprising connection!

Open House New York October 2015
24 OctOn 17 October 2015, we took part in a celebration of the 13th annual Open House New York event. Our chance to see a cross section of architecture and art in the city. Enjoy a selection of memorable moments from our outing.
In Manhattan even some of the birds live a step above the rest. Evidenced by this multistory log cabin:
One of many birdhouses on display in the thumbnail sized McCarthy Park, Chelsea.
In the Upper East side next to the United Nations, Tudor City also offers a few nice birdhouses.
Ford Foundation
Atrium viewed from the top floor looking down inside the Ford Foundation Building at 320 East 43rd Street.
Transparency was a key design element for architect Kevin Roche and his engineering partner, John Dinkeloo. The wealth of natural light and windows offers a view of the East River from most offices. Just as important, all offices are open for public view even the spacious quarters used by the leadership team.
This executive office was piled high with books and memorability from charitable activities around the world.
The roof made from glass and iron girders form a peek hole into the blue sky.
The cafeteria is on the top floor allowing all foundation employees and guests to enjoy the city landscape views.
Artwork like these two by Nelson Mandela and other artists span the corridors on the top floor.
Wall mural by an artist I was unable to source. Human faces printed on vinyl and wrapping buildings in a ghetto.
Sheila Hicks produced this texture pattern for the walls of the foundation auditorium. Hicks created the original large-scale, site-specific textile-based wall back in 1966. Installed when the foundation building was first opened. Damage from fireproofing and age left an open wound. At age 80 nearly 40 years later, Hicks recreated the original piece with hundreds of textile disks. Each piece made by hand with a team of helpers. Hicks was able to assemble some of her original team. Sadly, not all of the craft workers survived to take part in the new installment.

Hudson Yards
The Manhattan is under constant construction. Today best seen at the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project. How many cranes can you count? Reminded me of tower cranes in Berlin.
